Social responsibility (CSR)
Greenplanet & Speer IT
At Speer IT, we value sustainable and responsible entrepreneurship and try to contribute to it in every possible way. The main driver behind all CO2 reduction measures is our founder and CFO Peterpaul Brundel. We interviewed Peterpaul about his motivation and passion for this topic.
Peterpaul: “Ever since I was a child I have attached great importance to preventing the waste of energy and animal suffering. I have been a vegetarian for 40 years and I have done as much as possible to make my contribution to a better environment. In business too, one of my priorities is to create awareness among the employees at Speer. I have been driving an electric car myself for almost seven years now and 42% of our fleet now consists of fully electric vehicles. Our solar panels on the roof provide the green electricity to charge the cars.
As a member of the Dutch CO2 Neutral Foundation, we are striving to become a climate-neutral company. We have full insight into our CO2 emissions, using the CO2 Performance certificate. In the 7 years that we have held this certificate, we have already taken many CO2-reducing measures. In addition to electric cars, solar panels and smart sensors on our LED lighting, we have decided to work hybrid. The starting point here is 50% working from home. This not only gives people a better work-life balance but also makes a significant difference in reducing CO2 emissions. Corona has also made it quite normal to travel less. People now weigh up whether a meeting can be held via Teams or whether a personal visit is necessary. You can read all the reports we keep about this on our website.
Every year, we conduct a survey among our employees in which attention is paid to working from home on the one hand and to energy consumption at home on the other. In this survey, we ask the employees about their electricity and gas consumption, their home office, energy-saving measures they have taken and they can contribute ideas on how we can deal with energy consumption even more consciously. We are quite proud of the results and are happy to share them with you in our infographic!
A C02 neutral company is quite a challenge. In addition to reduction measures, Speer also deploys offsets. For example, in 2020 and 2022, the company decided to adopt tropical rainforest in Costa Rica together with its employees. Speer has done so through the Adopt Rainforest Foundation. The president of this foundation, Martin Havik, recently sent a video with a short report of his visit to Costa Rica, where he visited the part in the rainforest where our adopted trees are. Nice to see this “Wood Wide Web” in real life. Watch the video here. (link web page).
“I am fully aware that we are not there yet, but we are steadily going on.”
